Common Causes of Elbow Pain

Elbow pain is one of the most common injuries one can suffer. From your everyday athletes to weekend warriors, you use your elbows to help lift, throw, swing, and even hug. The elbow is essential to the upper body's mechanics.

The elbow is a joint that is formed where three bones come together. Those are your humorous, ulna, and radius. The ulna and radius make up the bones in your forearm. When the ligaments, tissues, and bones are damaged in this part of the body, the pain can be undeniable, so it could help look into elbow injury & joint pain treatment doctors in NYC.

Wear and tear injuries are much more common in elbow pain than one-off injuries. Stress/repetitive movements such as physical labor or sports such as baseball and racquetball are among the most common ways to induce elbow pain. The throwing motion in baseball is more unnatural than other repeated movements in sports. That is why you see major league pitchers often fall victim to the dreaded "Tommy John" injury. A devastating elbow injury can cause severe pain and discomfort and potentially affect the player for years.

Pitchers are also the ones who experience stress fractures the most than any other athlete. A small crack in the bone can hamper a pitcher's ability significantly.

Tennis and racquetball are common sports where one can suffer from tendonitis. This injury causes damage to the tendons due to overuse. This injury isn't just limited to these sports; however, anyone who uses repetitive motion for work can suffer from this pain as well.

More common in older age groups is arthritis. The most common form of this is rheumatoid arthritis, which is when your immune system attacks the body's healthy tissues and causes swelling in the joints. Ways to combat this type of pain are essential stretching, physical activity, and inquiring about elbow injury & joint pain treatment doctors in NYC.

Here are common one-time causes of elbow pain:

  • Dislocated elbow: This occurs when one of the three bones connected to the elbow is knocked out of its place. Though, most likely, a one-time injury, the pain can be excruciating, so be sure to contact your doctor immediately if this happens.

  • Fractured elbow: Usually happening due to a single blow such as a hit in football or a car accident, a fractured elbow can deceive you, and you may still experience a decent amount of movement. However, you should contact a doctor if this occurs, and the pain could worsen over time.

  • Elbow strains: TYpically, due to a fast and sudden movement, the muscles and ligaments can be torn and/or strained.

Common Causes of Joint Pain

Joint pain can affect all kinds of different areas of the body. From your elbow joints to knee joints to your shoulders, the multiple bones' connection often leads to this common pain. There are many ways one can experience joint pain. Gout, strains, sprains, and contact injuries are among the most common for joint pain.

The pain can range from mildly irritating to downright painful and debilitating. It could go away after a few weeks or several months. Thankfully there are ways to treat this common injury.

Here are some of the signs that you may be suffering from joint pain:

  • Joint redness

  • Joint swelling

  • Joint tenderness

  • Warmth

  • Locking of said joint

  • Loss of range of motion

  • Stiffness

The disease can also be a culprit for people experiencing joint pain. Conditions such as lupus, gout, and MS release inflammatory chemicals into the bloodstream. The resulting inflammation attacks joint tissues and can cause joint fluid, cartilage, and even bone damage. Pain in the joint that is believed to be done to inflammatories is usually the result of:

  • Bone erosions: damaged, pitted bones in your joints that can cause pain

  • Swollen joint capsule: Fluid buildup in joints, causing a feeling of pressure, stiffness, and pain.

It can seem like the reasoning behind your joint pain is for a multitude of reasons. Thankfully, for as many reasons, you may be experiencing pain, there are ways to get relief.

First and foremost, watch your weight. Extra weight puts unnecessary pressure on the joints, especially your lower extremities. Elbow injury & joint pain treatment doctors in NYC can help with that. They will create a custom workout plan to help you achieve results and therefore:

  • Decrease pain

  • Prevent future damage to your joints

  • Keep your joints flexible

Also recommended is hot and cold therapy. For heat treatments, you can include using a nice heated blanket to reduce stiffness and discomfort. For cold treatments, there is a mighty cold shower. Cold showers help your body increase circulation, reduce soreness, and help improve your skin's health.

You can take matters into your own hands at home. Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen that reduce inflammation help immensely. Just be sure to speak with a doctor before taking any medication. Also, the always recommended RICE method

  • Rest

  • Ice

  • Compress

  • Elevate

Rest your joints to be sure they are not overworked, ice the joint for 15 minutes several times a day and then wrap it with an elastic bandage. After all of this is completed, elevate the same joint over your heart with something soft like a pillow.

How can Physical Therapy Help?

The goal of physical therapy is to get patients back to the point they were at before their joints' pain put a strain on their life. Preserving a good range of motion is vital to maintain the ability to perform daily activities. Building strength is also a key in your PT as it will help improve the balance around the surrounding muscles of the joint pain.

Stretching and strengthening of the area surrounding the elbow muscles is essential in eliminating pain. Your PT can help you control inflammation and create custom exercises to target the pain's primary source in your elbow. You can expect exercises in your forearms, biceps, triceps, and shoulders to be included in your treatment.

Water exercises are both low-impact, so they are great on your joints and great for your endurance and stamina, which directly affect your weight and lower body strength, helping to lessen the problems caused by joint pain.

When experiencing pain in the elbows, you will need to target the region around the injury. Here are some of the exercises you are likely to encounter on your treatment plan.:

  • Wrist turn: Bend your elbow at a right angle and hold out your hand with the palm facing up. Then turn your wrist slowly so that your palm is now facing down. Hold and squeeze for 10 seconds, then relax your arm. Repeat three sets of 10.

  • Elbow bend: Stand up straight, lower your arm to one side. Then bend your arm slowly upward, so your hand is now touching your shoulder. Hold this pose for 20-30 seconds and squeeze slightly. Slightly increase the weight in your hand as time goes on.

  • Wrist flex: Keep your arm straight out in front of you with your palm facing down. Gently bend your wrist down and use your opposite hand to press the stretching hand back towards your body and then hold for 20 seconds. This exercise is really good for tennis elbow and, with modifications, can help your golfer's elbow as well.

Physical therapy can do wonders not only for the main source of your pain but improve your quality of life in other aspects such as endurance, strength, and balance. Help eliminate your pain by contacting elbow injury & joint pain treatment doctors in NYC.

You will first examine your range of motion. These exercises included will help relieve stiffness and increase the range of motion. These are most likely going to be home exercises due to their simplicity, and they will consist of stretching over your head and rolling your shoulders.
